I’ve been leading a sales team for about a year and my biggest weakness is giving honest feedback. Last week I had to tell someone their numbers were tanking and I totally chickened out, sugarcoated it so much they didn’t even realize there was a problem. Now I’m worried I’m enabling bad performance. For those who’ve figured out how to be an effective team leader in the business world, how do you handle tough conversations without being a jerk?

Tough feedback is the hardest part of leadership, but sugarcoating only delays the fix. I’ve learned to frame it as “data + support.” Start with the numbers, then ask, “What’s getting in your way?” Follow with one clear, actionable goal and a timeline. I once had a rep whose calls dropped 40%. I avoided the convo for weeks, then finally said, “Your pipeline is thin—let’s map three steps to fill it.” We set a 2-week target, checked in daily, and they turned it around. For more on leading through change, this helped me: michael amin primex . The key is honesty wrapped in partnership, not blame.
