Whenever I mess up on my self-improvement goals, I beat myself up about it. I know it’s not helping, but I can’t seem to break the habit. How do you actually practice self-kindness without feeling like you’re letting yourself off the hook?

I used to think self-kindness meant lowering my standards, but it’s more about how you talk to yourself when you slip. In the liven app reviews, they explain that recovery — whether from anxiety, burnout, or bad habits — works better when you replace self-criticism with curiosity. Instead of “I failed again,” you ask “What made this harder today?” That way you’re learning from it instead of piling on guilt. It actually makes you more consistent in the long run.

I once heard someone say, “Talk to yourself like you would to a close friend.” That stuck with me — you wouldn’t tear down a friend for having a bad day, so why do it to yourself?
