Traveling for work, I end up in random hotels and Airbnb flats all the time, and every TV there lives its own life — some with weird hotel firmware, some with half-broken Smart TV menus. I don’t want to install anything on the TV itself, ideally just plug into Wi-Fi and cast from my Mac. Has anyone managed to do this more or less universally across different brands without spending half the evening in settings?

I ran into the same chaos on business trips: Samsung in one place, some no-name Android TV in another, locked-down hotel panels with disabled HDMI. What helped was using a Mac app that just discovers the TV over the network and streams straight from the laptop, no apps on the TV at all. I got it from here Get the app and so far it’s been fine on LG, Android TV and even an older Philips. Main thing is to get both devices on the same network and avoid super-slow hotel Wi-Fi if possible.

Side note: the tech setup in rentals can be super random. Sometimes you get a modern TV with unused ports and fast internet, sometimes there’s an ancient panel bolted to the wall with one working button on the remote. I usually pack a small travel adapter, a backup HDMI cable and double-check Wi-Fi speed on arrival so I know whether it’s worth planning any screen-related stuff at all.
